Opportunities line up behind the scenes

Having taught Biology for many years, I had been out of teaching for a time to raise two daughters and get qualifications in Psychology. Going through the process of divorce, the day came when I knew I had to open a bank account in my own name although I had no income.
Later that day (Monday) someone told me of their friend Linda who was due to start maternity leave and needed someone to cover for her as Biology teacher in the local Sixth Form College. I had seen this post advertised but it didn't appeal as I was more interested in teaching Psychology although it wasn't taught at that level at this time. Also I needed a decent income and knew that a temporary, part-time post involving a lot of unpaid preparation in my own time didn't make economic sense.
On Wednesday evening I went to the local supermarket which had just started late night opening as an experiment. On arriving, the first person I saw was Linda, who I knew by sight. On impulse I introduced myself and we discussed the Biology post. She made it sound more appealing and I could see that she was feeling relieved to have found a likely candidate but anxious that she had to bring up what she thought was a down-side. The post included some Psychology teaching which the college was trialing with a view to opening a full department the next year. As she didn't like teaching Psychology, she imagined that I felt the same. But this sealed the deal for me.
On Friday I went to the college to formalize the arrangements.
As I was leaving I was asked to call in at the Finance Office to give my bank account details!!!
I went on to run the Psychology department there for 12 years until the college closed.
