The subtle difference between gratitude and appreciation

I really appreciated this clip from Abraham-Hicks. For some time I had realised that my gratitude was really relief that things could have been worse or a time-out from an unpleasant situation.

This clip really clarified for me how gratitude can be subtly fear-based and possibly attract more of what is feared. Whereas appreciation focuses on what is valued now with no hint of negativity.

Perhaps gratitude is reactive whereas appreciation is proactive.

I once asked a blind man if he appreciated his guide dog. He said he was grateful to have it but he didn't appreciate it as he associated it with having lost his sight.

It's as if appreciation is gratitude with added value. Also "to appreciate" is to "increase in value".
