Using The Law of Attraction - A Little Lost

I am almost 34 and I've had a life full of disappointments, issues, and obstacles. While I've always been "strong" to deal with these issues, I know I need a change...across the board.


I'm highly skilled and talented, but have let finances, doubt and limitations stand in the way of my dreams; pursuing a career in something that would make me happy opposed to staying at a job that I feel taken advantage of, not fulfilling and is only there to "pay the bills".

Primarily, I want to be happy and financially free.

When I first heard of The Secret, I was at a video shoot taping - one area/industry I actually want to be in. I immediately felt I was there for a reason other than why I came so I watched the movie, bought the cd and read a lot of articles.

I stopped smoking within days, I made a vision move that I watch twice a day, and I have been manifesting parking spaces. I've planned good days at work and I've really been feeling excited and good about my progress. However, my main problems seem to be unwanted thoughts that trickle in and not be able to quickly change those thoughts which then spirals into insecurities of attracting what I want.

I find it hard to get out of frustrating moments. I began having vivid dreams and thoughts at night about work - what I did or didn't do and those negative thoughts pour over into my mornings when I wake. I steadily try to convince myself of good days, positive attitudes and visioning what I want but I feel I'm doing something wrong. Perhaps, thinking too much?

Another thing, how can I ask for money, live as if I have money but at the same time watch what I'm actually spending, because I don't actually have the financial freedom just yet?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It is not surprising that anyone finds it difficult to control their thoughts, it’s not something that has ever been taught to us, and generally, not many people put any importance on our thoughts and the result of our thinking.

And to go from out of control thoughts of fear, worry, regret and dissatisfaction, to controlled thoughts of hope, anticipation, forgivingness and satisfaction is an almost impossible jump to make.

To be honest, this would be one of my major criticisms of the film The Secret, as it focuses so much of it’s message on the asking process of the Law of Attraction, suggesting that it is an easy process to go from fear and worry to hope and anticipation, which of course, it is not.

You see, our minds tend to have two states of thought, negative thought, or positive thought. That is, thought that leads to an unwanted experience, or thought that leads to a wanted experience.

Negative thoughts of fear, worry, regret and dissatisfaction, will lead us to a reality that causes us to be fearful, worried, regretful and dissatisfied, while positive thoughts of hope, anticipation, forgivingness and satisfaction, will lead us to a reality that causes us to be hopeful, excited, forgiving and satisfied.

The trouble is, if you try to focus your thoughts on a wanted experience, and do nothing to deal with your fear, worry, regret and dissatisfaction, you run the risk of underlining the idea that your fear, worry, regret and dissatisfaction, is a justified way of thinking.

For instance, if you have thoughts of fear and worry over money, and you try to visualize an abundant lifestyle, no doubt, it feels good. But when you then come back to your reality of no money, you could easily feel the difference of what you have now, compared to what you want, which can lead to enforce your thoughts of fear and worry about money.

It is not that I want to belittle the use of visualization to apply the Law of Attraction, it can be a very powerful tool. It’s just that as a tool, it will not always fit the job at hand, and sometimes other methods will need to be employed.

One of the subjects, touched on in the film The Secret, which is the key to changing the way you think, is gratitude.

It seems quite simplistic to suggest that by adopting an attitude of gratitude, you can change the focus of your thoughts from a negative outlook to a positive outlook, but gratitude is one of the most powerful tools you can use.

A quality of our minds is that you cannot think an opposing thought at the same time.

It is impossible to think a positive thought when you are thinking a negative one, which is why so many people have trouble getting their visualizations to work.

If it is the case that you cannot think an opposing thought at the same time, and that a positive thought cannot exist in the presence of a negative thought, it also must be true that a negative thought, cannot exist in the presence of a positive thought. And if this is the case, it would be impossible for you to have thoughts of fear, worry, regret and dissatisfaction, when you were having thoughts of gratitude for something you do have now.

I would suggest to anyone who has seemingly out of control thoughts about there now experience, to spend some time focusing on the good things they have in this experience, and to use these thoughts to try to remove the unwanted thoughts that seem to be running away in their minds.

To do this, write out list of what is good now, what you like now, and spend some time focusing on what it is that you are happy with in your now experience.

For the time being, instead of visualizing what it is you want, use these sessions to focus on what it is you have, that you are happy about. Do this every morning, every evening, and whenever you would have done your visualization exercise.

Become very familiar with what’s good, and as more good stuff happens, add these new experiences to your list.

What you will find, is that the more you focus on what you have, that is a match for the things you desire to have, the more desirable experiences will present themselves, and as they do, you will have more and more good things to focus on.

You can also use this gratitude list, to stop any thought that is not a constructive thought that leads towards your desires.

When any thought that contradicts your desires, typically negative thoughts like fear, worry, regret and dissatisfaction, use your gratitude thoughts to forget them.

That is, when you become aware that you are worrying or regretting something, get something for that thought, switch your focus to what is good now, and as you do, you shift the whole focus of your thought from a negative destructive attitude, to a positive constructive attitude.

It is a difficult thing to control our thoughts, so do not try. Simply become aware of what you are thinking, and when you slip into thoughts that do not match your desires, simply choose what you think.

I would also suggest that you practise meditation to become more aware of your thoughts. I have practised Vipassana Meditation for some time now and I am sure it will help you.

Vipassana Meditation is also called Mindfulness, and it will help you become more aware of what you are thinking, as well as give you the ability to quickly and easily change your thought.
